In our factories today, humanoid robots are steadily establishing themselves as tireless colleagues – and, as the documentary Homo Roboticus suggests, before long, they might be helping out in our homes too. As Professor Danica Kragic Jensfelt puts it, “The big challenge is to get a robot to understand what a human really wants”. Her research at KTH, Kungliga Tekniska högskolan, focuses on teaching robots to perceive their environment, learn from humans, and perform tasks that are either too dull, too dangerous, or too delicate for people. In production lines, they can take over repetitive jobs, and in the future, she hopes they will become intelligent assistants in our daily lives – not to replace us, but to free us from the mundane.
