This week, we gathered for a special pōwhiri to welcome Colonel Jennifer Groves as she begins her appointment as Chief Secretary for The Salvation Army in New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga and Samoa. Surrounded by whānau, officers and staff, Commissioner Janine Donaldson offered a prayer of blessing and strength over Jennifer’s leadership journey. Jennifer shared her excitement to serve, acknowledging the challenges and the joy ahead: “It won’t always be easy, but God’s given us wisdom, joy and humour and together we can do this.” She finished by saying “So buckle up, folks! It's going to be a blast.”

Sometimes the greatest gift isn’t wrapped in paper. It’s a moment of kindness, a word of hope, a reminder that no one has to face the hardest days alone. ‘When she said, “You’ve come to the right place. We can help you,” I nearly cried on her lap that day,’ says John. After years battling addiction, John, Jess and their children found wraparound support, aroha and the encouragement they needed to rebuild. Food support, warm clothing, budgeting advice, Christmas gifts… and one very special bear named Koha who brought comfort and courage to their young son, Olly. This Christmas, thousands of whānau will come through our doors hoping to hear the same words: You can do this. We’re here with you. This week our Territorial Commander, Commissioner Janine Donaldson, met with representatives from Woolworths New Zealand at our Open Doors event in Royal Oak. We were delighted to host: • Sally Copland, Managing Director, Woolworths NZ • Gordon Harcourt, Community Programmes & PR Manager • Kelly Connelly, Marketing Manager The morning included a mihi whakatau led by Walter Aranui, an overview of our mission and time with our Community Ministries Royal Oak team. Kerrie Palma and Anita Dadzie shared how our Choice Model Kai Support works, and the Woolworths team saw where donated kai goes and how food support can be the first step toward wider wraparound transformation. We are grateful for Woolworths’ ongoing commitment to supporting whānau, strengthening food security and investing in communities. Partnerships like this help us continue caring for people, transforming lives and reforming society. Thank you to the Woolworths team for joining us and for walking alongside us in this mission.
