Hospitals and Health Care

About us

Health New Zealand - Southern is part of Health New Zealand - Te Whatu Ora which leads the day-to-day running of the health system across New Zealand. Health New Zealand - Southern supports everyone across our district to live well, and access the right care when they need it, by delivering high quality, patient-centred and equitable health services to our diverse communities. We are responsible for planning, funding, and providing health and disability services to a population of over 350,000 located South of the Waitaki River. Our catchment area encompasses Invercargill City, Queenstown - Lakes District, Gore, rural Southland, Clutha, Central Otago, Maniototo, Waitaki District and Dunedin City. To achieve this, we work in partnership with Iwi, primary care and community providers, rural trust hospitals and education and research partners across the district. Altogether, we receive government funding of over $900 million per annum, of which approximately half is applied to traditional hospital and mental health services delivered from Southland Hospital, Lakes District Hospital (Queenstown), Dunedin Hospital and Wakari Hospital. The other half of our funding is applied through contracts with a range of primary and community health providers. This funding is distributed to providers such as Primary Health Organisations (general practices), pharmacies, laboratories, aged residential care facilities, Pacific Islands and Māori Health providers, non-governmental mental health services, rural hospitals, and primary maternity facilities. Our statutory purpose is to: -improve, promote and protect the health of our population -promote effective care and support for people in need of personal health or disability services -reduce health outcome disparities -manage national strategies and implementation plans

  • Exciting progress at the New Dunedin Hospital Inpatient Site! The first concrete pour is complete. Starting in the early hours of Tuesday morning and wrapping up 11 hours later, this pour forms part of the subfloor. This area will house some of the new building’s major hydraulic services. The lower slab is a massive 800mm thick, laying the foundation for the next phase of construction including the basis for the lift pits. #NewDunedinHospital #BuildingForTheFuture Photo: The concrete pour in progress. • Building the Future from the Ground — and the Sky Hamish Miller, Senior Project Manager at RCP, is helping deliver the New Dunedin Hospital. His role spans design coordination, change management, and ensuring transparency across the build. Since 2023, Hamish has also been flying drones over the site, capturing over 1,300 aerial images and creating weekly 3D renders to support planning and documentation. Every flight is carefully planned under strict safety protocols, especially within the Dunedin Hospital’s heli-path. Originally from Winton, Hamish is proud to contribute to a project that will serve Otago and beyond for generations. #NewDunedinHospital #HealthNZ Photos: Hamish Miller and his latest New Dunedin Hospital site drone image

  • New Dunedin Hospital Inpatient Building Update We’re excited to share two fresh perspectives of the Inpatient Building site — check out these views. The top photo shows the Inpatient Building site with the Outpatient Building in the background. The bottom photo flips the perspective — taken from the third floor of the Outpatient Building, looking back at the Inpatient Building site. Work continues on the old Cadbury site, with great progress on capping the 324 foundation piles. The ones in clusters need a pile cap. So far, 100 of 124 pile caps have been poured and completed, and the remainder are on track to be finished by the end of December. Next up: the substructure construction begins in early 2026. • New Dunedin Hospital: Capturing Progress Ged Davis, Southern’s Regional Electrical Team Leader, has turned his passion for photography into a unique workplace project — documenting the construction of the New Dunedin Hospital through time-lapse. Outside of work, Ged enjoys capturing nature with a technical twist, from birds in flight using motion sensors to stars tracked across the night sky. That same creativity led him to install a camera in Dunedin Hospital’s Level 10 plant room, overlooking the Outpatient Building site. Since November 2022, the camera has snapped a photo every 10 minutes, creating a stunning visual archive of the transformation unfolding on the old Wilson car park. Ged’s initiative is a brilliant example of how personal passions can enrich our work and help tell the story of Southern’s future in a fresh and engaging way. #NewDunedinHospital #Timelapse #SouthernHealth #BehindTheScenes #PhotographyInHealthcare #InnovationAtWork
