When to Use Hardware Scanners

Hardware scanners are ideal for events with more than 5,000 attendees where check-in speed is critical. These devices use dedicated laser or imager technology to scan tickets faster and more reliably than smartphone cameras, especially in challenging lighting conditions or crowded entry areas.

Supported Hardware

Luma integrates with professional ticket scanning hardware, including the Zebra scanner series and other enterprise-grade handheld barcode scanners. These devices are designed for high-volume scanning operations and offer improved durability, battery life, and scanning performance compared to consumer devices.

Zebra Scanner Series

The Zebra TC series touch computers (including models like the TC52 and TC57) combine Android OS with professional barcode scanning capabilities. These devices run the Luma Android app and use hardware-accelerated scanning to process tickets quickly.

Other Compatible Devices

Other Android-based handheld scanners with barcode reading capabilities may also work with Luma's check-in system. The key requirements are Android OS support and the ability to decode QR codes.

How It Works

Hardware scanners use the standard Luma Android app—the same app you already know. There's no special software to learn or new interface to master. Your team uses the familiar Luma check-in flow they're already comfortable with, just with faster and more reliable scanning hardware.

When you scan a guest's ticket with a compatible device, the hardware scanner reads the QR code and the Luma app processes the check-in exactly as it would with a smartphone camera. The same guest QR codes that appear in confirmation emails work with hardware scanners, so there's no need to generate special tickets or change your event workflow.
