Glossary

A glossary of terms related to data portability at Meta.

Adapter - The code that provides the translation between a destination’s core infrastructure and the DTP environment. Data Adapters translate destination’s API data into DTP common data models and vice versa

Data Portability – A concept that enables users to transfer a copy of their data from one service or platform to another.

Data Transfer Project (DTP) – An open source project that facilitates the development of adapters required for transferring data between services. DTP is a collaboration of organizations committed to building a common framework with open-source code that can connect any two online service providers, enabling a seamless, direct, user-initiated portability of data between the two platforms.

Data Type - A categorization of user data, such as Photos or Calendar Events, that can be transferred using DTP. Every Adapter can export or import one Data Type, and each platform exports and/or imports one or more Data Type.

Destination - The app or service provider that the person is transferring their data to.

OAuth - An industry-standard protocol for authorization.

Scope - A mechanism in OAuth 2.0 to limit an application's access to a user's account.

Export Your Information (EYI) - Data access and portability tool available on Meta platforms that allows people to download a copy of their data to their device or to securely transfer a copy of their data to another service.
