Through the Vay app, users can request an electric vehicle to be remotely delivered to their location. After the car has arrived, the user takes over and drives it like a regular car. At the end of the trip, the user exits the car, and a Remote Driver takes over, eliminating the time-consuming search for parking. This creates the most affordable door-to-door mobility service at half the ride-hailing price. Since its launch, users have taken thousands of rides and can hail a Vay car at a wide variety of locations throughout Las Vegas, including the busiest hotels on the Strip. At Slush today, Vay’s Co-founder and CEO Thomas von der Ohe sat down with Robert Lacher, Founding Partner at Visionaries Club, for a fireside chat on the future of mobility and the realities of building deep-tech companies in Europe. A few highlights from their conversation: 🔹 Europe continues to lag in autonomous driving. It’s a competitive market, but significant regulatory hurdles slow progress. 🔹 Robotaxis have moved through repeated cycles of optimism and pessimism. At Vay, we built our technology to offer a practical solution that could reach the market. And now, help autonomous driving move forward. 🔹 Thomas’s story shows that a founder’s journey is rarely linear - but, as he said, always worth it. After presenting the technical feasibility of remote driving together with Hans-Leo Ross at Safetronic 2023, it was exciting to continue the discussion this time with the operational experience Vay has gathered over almost two years of remote driving without a person physically in the car. A key focus throughout these operations has been ensuring a 𝗿𝗼𝗯𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵. During my presentation, I elaborated on: 🚗 The 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀, such as remote car-sharing or ADS support, where remote driving can provide real value. 🧑✈️ Insights from 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗘𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, as part of my PhD and in research collaboration with Technische Universität Darmstadt. 📜 An overview of 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆’𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, the StVFernLV - making Germany the first country worldwide to introduce such a legal framework for remote driving.
