Project developers, investors, lenders, contractors and governments are facing both opportunity as well as new challenges in response to a global surge in defence spending. In our webinar series “Navigating a new era of defence”, our team explores the unique complexities involved in Canada’s defence industry, best practices for working with the government on these opportunities, and the dynamics of partnering with Indigenous communities. The first session “Developing Canada’s defence capabilities” examines the current government's pursuit of growing Canada’s defense capabilities and national sovereignty through strategic projects and procurement. Our team will also highlight current projects in the pipeline, considerations for dual-purpose projects, leveraging private capital, and challenges and opportunities relating to defence development. "To be recognized by such an institution known as Canada’s Nuclear University means more to me than any professional title or accolade.” Rumina Velshi, a driving force in nuclear energy innovation for more than four decades, will receive an honorary doctorate from McMaster's Faculties of Engineering and Science. Her leadership spans technical and policy roles at Ontario Hydro and Ontario Power Generation, and as President and CEO of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission – Commission canadienne de sûreté nucléaire. She’s also contributed globally through advisory roles with the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency, Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority, and more. She co-founded ZettaJoule, Inc., a nuclear energy startup in Japan. Most recently she joined Torys LLP as a senior advisor in its Energy and Infrastructure Practice. Yesterday, she visited McMaster's campus where she was a guest lecturer for the Principles in Nuclear Engineering course. This course is one that’s eligible for our newly launched Minor in Nuclear Studies and Society. She also toured our nuclear reactor, and connected with students, faculty and staff. We can't wait to honour Rumina on November 20! Read more about her inspiring journey here: https://lnkd.in/gNpbuh2G Photos by Peter Rukavina
