These little ghosts and goblins are all set for their first Halloween at our two Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs). 🎃 👻 Families got into the spooky spirit last week as they dressed their little ones up in some truly adorable costumes. St. Michael’s Hospital in downtown Toronto and St. Joseph’s Health Centre in the city’s west end each welcome about 500 newborns annually. Both are Level 2C NICUs, the second level highest of care in the Province. These interprofessional hubs bring together specialized teams — including nurses, neonatologists and pediatricians, social workers, dieticians, lactation consultants and occupational therapists — all dedicated to caring for our tiniest patients. Alongside meeting urgent medical needs, the teams also focus on supporting the emotional wellbeing of parents and guardians during this challenging and transformative time and making the Units feel a bit more like home helps enhance the experience for families. #Halloween #TrickOrTreat #SpookySeason #SpookySounds #UnityHealthToronto #NICU

On September 29, our staff, physicians, learners, volunteers, and patient family partners came together to celebrate the 2025 Our Shared Values Awards on St. Michael’s Feast Day. These awards honour individuals who embody St. Michael’s core values: Human Dignity, Compassion, Excellence, Community and Inclusivity. A family physician who serves individuals the healthcare system often overlooks. An Intake Coordinator that demonstrates sensitivity and acknowledgment of people experiencing mental health struggles and homelessness. A nephrologist with a visionary approach to kidney care. A volunteer who works to preserve our shared history in the archives. A Research Equity Specialist that has cultivated a strong Equitable Research in Action workshop series. These are the winners of the 2025 Our Shared Values Awards at St. Michael’s who have been recognized for going above and beyond to embody Unity Health’s values of human dignity, compassion, excellence, community and inclusivity. Dr. Heyu Ni’s lab at St. Michael’s Hospital examines how platelets are not only crucial for blood clotting, but also liver regeneration and stabilizing the immune system. In a study published in PNAS in September, Dr. Ni’s team looked at thrombopoietin (TPO), the hormone produced mainly in the liver that controls platelet production in our blood and maintains the environment where stem cells are formed. The team found that Kupffer cells (white blood cells in the liver) are required for generating and regulating TPO, and consequently our platelet count, which has never been explored until now. This leading research on how Kupffer cells work and their connection to TPO is a step forward in treating patients who suffer from dangerously low platelet count, such as patients with leukemia or autoimmune diseases. “Patients with a low platelet count could risk uncontrollable bleeding in areas like the lungs and even the brain. This could be lethal,” says Dr. Ni. “Treating these patients is a challenge.
