The Ministry of Health is increasingly unwillingly to pay MDs for their work as evident in this report. This aligns with my experience - I spent 2hrs on the phone this week, trying to get paid for 4hrs of work (work done between 1am to 5am) caring for Ontario residents, critically injured, that I accepted in transfer and that I resuscitated to optimize their outcome. It almost seems that they've built in by design, to automatically reject billing codes knowing that only a small proportion of MDs will contest it. If this is their way of "saving money" it's disgusting. A universal healthcare system is amazing and important. But when the payer decides unilaterally not to pay it's clinicians then there's a problem. https://lnkd.in/gibabUnw

When doctors spend hours fighting to get paid for care they’ve already provided, patients lose time and they can’t afford to wait.  Doctors receive rejections for services billed at an alarming rate. I’m a CPA so my natural inclination is to make sense of things through numbers. The Ministry of Health’s own numbers say they process more than 200 million claims a year and only a small percentage get rejected. Well, that small percentage is about 1.6 million claims a year and of those, 58,000 take longer than 30 days to rectify, and some don’t ever get resolved. That's more than 1,000 claims a week that are not being paid for services provided to Ontarians and they’re not being resolved in a timely manner. Rejected billings are focused on a few specialties, primarily surgeons, so the numbers don’t tell the whole story. The physicians impacted are typically doing really complex surgeries and procedures. We have created an unintended disincentive to do complex work. Those complex cases are the patients that need us to care for them.   Addressing this issue is our first of six priorities in our We Won’t Give Up advocacy campaign. This week, Ontario’s doctors, medical students, and OMA staff gathered at Queen’s Park to meet with provincial MPPs to discuss solutions to strengthen healthcare across the province.   Our conversations focused on the six key priorities of our We Won’t Give Up advocacy campaign:   - Modernizing OHIP Billing - Driving innovation in digital health care - Ensuring every Ontarian has a family doctor - Improving access to community-based specialists - Supporting physician wellness - Strengthening preventive care   Every meeting was an opportunity to bring forward the voices and experiences of physicians working across Ontario, and to collaborate on solutions that ensure patients get the care they need, when and where they need it.   Thank you to all the MPPs who took the time to meet with us, and to every physician who continues to advocate for a better health-care system for all Ontarians.   Ontario’s Doctor’s Won’t Give Up. Right now, widespread OHIP billing problems are disrupting how physicians provide care. When claims are delayed or rejected, it impacts how clinics are funded and takes time away from patients. Ontario’s doctors are urging the government to fix these issues and make OHIP work as it was intended, to support patient care, not create barriers to it. https://lnkd.in/gktvrkMD
