As Nurse Practitioner Week comes to a close we proudly celebrate the incredible team of nurse practitioners at Mackenzie Health and the meaningful impact they make every day through their expertise, leadership and compassion. With exceptional skill and clinical knowledge, they provide care, guidance and reassurance to patients and families throughout our community.    Nurse practitioners have advanced training; they assess health concerns, diagnose and treat illnesses and support patients through every stage of care. Across our inpatient and outpatient programs and in the 10 long-term care homes we support, they order and interpret tests, prescribe medications and help patients navigate their health journey with confidence.    Earlier this week, we were honoured to welcome Dr. Michelle Acorn, CEO of the NPAO: Nurse Practitioners Association of Ontario, who joined our nurse practitioner team and Mackenzie Health leaders at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital. The association represents more than 5,000 nurse practitioners across the province and works to advance and expand their role in delivering compassionate, patient-centred care.     During her visit, Michelle shared updates on advocacy priorities, recent achievements and upcoming changes to the nurse practitioner scope of practice in Ontario. We are grateful to Michelle for taking the time to meet with our team and for her ongoing leadership and advocacy.    To our nurse practitioners: thank you for your dedication and the meaningful impact you make every day. #NursePractitionerWeek #TeamMH #Leadership #ProfessionalDevelopment

  • A big thank you to Minister Stephen Lecce and MPP Laura Smith for the warm welcome at Queen’s Park. We had many meaningful discussions about how we can work together to ensure Mackenzie Health continues to grow alongside our community. As our population expands and demand for care increases, it’s essential that we plan today to ensure we have the space, staff and resources needed to care for tomorrow’s patients, close to home.

  • Mary Agnes Wilson, Interim President and CEO at Mackenzie Health, recently sat down with the Healthcare Insurance Reciprocal of Canada (HIROC) to talk about how we’re building a culture where every team member feels empowered to speak up for safety. The results speak for themselves — a 64% reduction in serious safety events and stronger collaboration across our organization. Watch her interview below. #CPSW2025 #PatientSafety #HIROC #HealthcareSafety #MackenzieHealth

16 Minutes with Mary Agnes Wilson, Interim President and CEO at Mackenzie Health: We Talk About High Reliability, Patient Safety, and Reinforcing a Strong Culture. It's Canadian Patient Safety Week! In this interview, we catch up with Mary-Agnes to learn more about how her organization is making a big impact. Here are a few of the topics we discuss: • Developed local quality and improvement frameworks, including: engaging frontline staff, having access to real-time electronic quality boards at the point of care, and democratizing data • Standardized safety reviews and reporting • launched a comprehensive education communication plan to spread throughout the entire org • Supporting staff to be empowered, to speak up for safety, to be a part of the solution "I think for us the proof is in the outcome," said Mary-Agnes. Mackenzie Health achieved a 64% reduction in serious safety events, a 48% reduction in patient complaints, 30% fewer hospital harm cases compared to the national CIHI average, a 50% reduction in central line infections, and a 53% reduction in patient fall injuries. We at HIROC heard how her team’s open communication strategy is truly supporting engagement, not to mention the “line of sight” it’s opening right across the organization. Mary-Agnes and Philip De Souza also take a moment to recognize the amazing impact of nurses, too! A special shout-out to Jennifer Zelmer and her team at Healthcare Excellence Canada for all their work raising awareness on safety in healthcare. How is your organization recognizing Canadian Patient Safety Week? Let us know in the comments! #HIROC #CPSW2025 #PatientSafety #Safety #Healthcare #HealthcareSafety

Meet Zare Mae, a nurse educator with the Chronic Kidney Disease Program at Mackenzie Health. Zare Mae began her journey at Mackenzie Health in 2019 as a float nurse through the Nursing Graduate Guarantee Program — an initiative that supports newly registered nurses and practical nurses by providing full-time employment opportunities within their first year of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario. This experience allowed her to build confidence, explore different departments and ultimately discover her passion for dialysis care. Along the way, she received the William F. Bell Endowment Fund, a bursary from Mackenzie Health and Mackenzie Health Foundation, made possible through the generosity of our donors. This support helped her complete a diabetes education program — one of several opportunities that have supported her growth. Today, Zare Mae trains and mentors new team members across dialysis and nephrology sites, helping them grow just as she once did. “Mackenzie Health has given me endless opportunities to learn and lead. I’m proud to be part of a team that helps people reach their full potential.” With the support and opportunities available at Mackenzie Health, Zare continues to advance her career — inspiring others to do the same. 🌟 Interested in a meaningful role in health care? • We were honoured to be the site for the Epic Ontario Collaborative X/UGM 2025 conference today at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital. 💙      This annual conference brings together health-care professionals, digital health experts and leaders from hospitals across Ontario who use the Epic electronic health record (EHR) system. The event focuses on collaboration — sharing ideas, innovations and best practices that enhance patient care and improve the clinician experience.  Throughout the day, participants heard inspiring presentations, connected with peers and explored new ways technology is transforming health care — from streamlining workflows to advancing artificial intelligence and improving patient outcomes.      We were especially proud to showcase Mackenzie Health’s Gestational Diabetes Care Companion, which demonstrates how digital tools can better support expectant parents and their care teams.      A sincere thank-you to all attendees, speakers and partners for contributing to such a meaningful day of learning and collaboration. Together, we’re shaping the future of digital health in Ontario.      #Epic #MackenzieHealth #DigitalHealth #InnovationInCare #EpicSystems #OntarioHealth
