Nurse practitioners (NP) have long been a cornerstone of patient care. The profession traces its roots to 1965, when the first formal training program was created at the University of Colorado in response to the shortage of primary care providers — especially among underserved populations.

Nearly 60 years later, NPs are indispensable across the healthcare landscape, including hospitals, private practice and pharmaceutical companies, such as Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS). Their clinical expertise and focus on patient-centered care at BMS is helping expand their contribution and make a greater impact for patients.

Paying it forward: Pursuing a career in healthcare

For Texas native MinhAnh Nguyen, a clinical nurse consultant at BMS, the drive to pursue nursing was born from a deeply personal experience.

“I’ve always gravitated toward caring for people,” Nguyen explains. “But a defining moment for me was when my grandmother was hospitalized. She was 98 years old and didn’t speak much English, but I saw that the nurses really took time to get to know her and give her the best care possible. That left a lasting mark on me.”

Inspired by their compassion, Nguyen pursued a degree in nursing, and she went on to work as an oncology nurse at one of the state’s largest cancer centers. Four years later, she decided to pursue additional training to become a nurse practitioner.

“Working with cancer patients helped me appreciate the strength of the people I cared for and inspired me to give my all every single day, knowing that I had the health and ability to support these incredible individuals that were going through their own journeys,” she says.

Now as a BMS employee on the U.S. Oncology team, Nguyen’s depth of experience enables her to have a broader impact than would have been possible in the hospital setting. She explains, “We bring our clinical expertise to our products and disease states, providing a real-world perspective that connects with nurses, nurse practitioners and pharmacists. We engage in dialogues focused on dosing, administration and adverse event awareness to ensure healthcare providers have robust education and feel empowered to best treat their patients.”

Grounded in passion, forged by experience

Stories like Nguyen’s reflect the commitment, effort and resilience required to become an NP. The path to becoming a board-certified NP typically stretches over eight years or more, which includes earning a bachelor’s degree and gaining clinical experience as a registered nurse, followed by advanced training via a master’s or doctor of nursing practice program.

As the need for collaboration deepens, the role of NPs — both in the clinic and at companies like BMS — will only continue to expand. And their unique blend of clinical expertise, scientific acumen and strong communication skills position them as vital contributors at BMS.
