A vast scope of works has been completed across the Arc Infrastructure Metro region during a recent network shutdown.

The planned outages between 3 – 15 September provided a valuable opportunity to undertake critical infrastructure upgrades across the metro area of the Arc network, with a strong focus on coordination, efficiency and minimising disruption to customers.

Arc’s Metro region Track Team, supported by contractors and overseen by Arc’s Metro region Services Patrollers, worked tirelessly throughout the shutdown period to deliver a variety of works safely and on schedule.

Arc coordinated the network shutdown to align with a CBH shut which allowed for targeted upgrades to the track into CBH’s facility at Kwinana and within the CBH siding. The Arc team undertook re-sleepering, ballast renewal, and rerailing works to improve the reliability and performance of this key section on the network, further enhancing the infrastructure supporting grain movements in the region.

Arc’s Third Party Project team also took advantage of the shutdown window to complete significant works at two metro sites.

To support Metronet’s New Midland Station, the Third Party Project team removed the old flashbutt welding connection, including crossover 716 and turnout 715, and renewed turnout 725, which connects to the PTA regional line.

The site presented some access challenges with restrictions on both sides of the track, but despite these constraints, the team successfully delivered the works within the 110-hour shut period.
Arc’s Structures team also oversaw the upgrade of four culverts using glass reinforced plastic (GRP) lining, leveraging the Midland outage to undertake these improvement work.

On the Thornlie-Cockburn Link alignment, Arc closed out the final track works with a ballast drop and the use of the regulator machine, marking the completion of Arc’s scope on the project.
Reflecting on the success of the shutdown, Head of Major Projects Sudip Saha acknowledged the complex nature of the works program, undertaken not only in the metro region, but across the entire Arc network.

“The level of coordination required to complete such a vast scope of works, not only in the metro region, but in every other Arc region, requires months of planning,” Sudip said.

“We maximised the opportunity and delivered real improvements to the network, while keeping customer impact to a minimum. It’s a great example of what can be achieved when we work together with a shared focus” he said.
