To the President and Members of the Legislative Council of the Parliament of Western Australia in Parliament assembled. We the undersigned ...
residents of Western Australia, draw the attention of the House to the inequity faced by cancer patients living in the eastern suburbs and the Perth Hills in accessing radiation oncology services.
Currently, patients in Mandurah, Rockingham, and surrounds needing radiation oncology can access free treatment subsidised by the State Government at local private providers instead of traveling to Fiona Stanley Hospital. Patients from Midland, Kalamunda, Wooroloo, and nearby areas cannot access this and must choose between exhausting daily trips to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital or significant out-of-pocket costs at facilities like the Icon Cancer Centre in Midland.
This postcode lottery is unfair and places an unacceptable burden on patients and caregivers already enduring the pain, exhaustion, and distress of cancer treatment. Suitable facilities exist in Midland and can provide local care but remain inaccessible to public patients without government support.
Your petitioners respectfully request the Legislative Council to call on the State Government to:
1. Immediately address the inequity in access to radiation oncology without out-of-pocket expenses for patients in the East Metropolitan Region and Perth Hills;
2. Establish public access to existing Midland facilities via funding, partnerships, or other means;
3. Provide a clear timeline for implementation and commitment to ensure no cancer patient is disadvantaged by location.
And your petitioners as in duty bound, will ever pray.
