When people started receiving breast density notifications in their screening letters, our researchers kept hearing the same question: “what does this actually mean?” For many GPs, the answers weren’t straightforward either. Different clinics used different explanations. Different states used different processes. To strengthen how breast density is explained in care settings, our researchers, Professor Jon Emery and Dr Dulashi (Anna) Withanage Dona, joined breast specialists, radiologists, GPs, consumer groups and the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing to build one national, evidence-based guide. It’s the first time all the research, expertise and real-world experience have been pulled into a single resource. The first students to take part in our Rural Medical Pathway have officially graduated 🎓 Delivered with La Trobe University and our Department of Rural Health at UniMelb, the program trains future doctors entirely in regional settings, helping graduates stay and work in the communities that need them. This inaugural cohort will now head into hospitals and clinics across rural Australia, taking their regional training straight into regional practice. Our researchers have created an #AI tool that builds ‘digital twins’ of patients, giving a clearer picture of how someone’s health may change over time. Trained on thousands of electronic health records, the model can predict shifts in vital signs and treatment responses with strong accuracy. Led by Associate Professor Michael Menden, the team says this approach could support earlier interventions and more personalised care, while improving how trials are designed and conducted. They’re now working with The Royal Women's Hospital to apply this technology to #endometriosis, using digital twins to better understand symptoms, treatment responses and long-term health patterns. Announced by Jane Gunn AO at this year’s Galli Research Symposium, these new fellowships will support researchers across WEHI (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research), Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, The Royal Children's Hospital and Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) working in melanoma and skin cancer, developmental disorders, medical biology and paediatric orthopaedics. A breakthrough from researchers at the The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity is offering hope in the long search for an HIV cure. Dr Paula Cevaal and her team have designed a novel lipid nanoparticle that delivers mRNA into HIV-infected resting T-cells, exposing the virus and addressing one of the biggest barriers to curing HIV. By revealing the dormant virus, researchers can now begin exploring how to target and clear it from the bodym bringing this goal closer to reality for the 40 million people living with HIV worldwide. Breakthroughs happen when research meets real-world impact. ASX-listed radiopharmaceutical company, Clarity Pharmaceuticals, is developing next-generation radiopharmaceutical products for cancer patients, based on research founded at #UniMelb. This research laid the foundation for a long-term industry-academic partnership that hopes to redefine the future of targeted cancer therapy and diagnostics. That question brought almost 300 people together at Federation Square for a honest discussion hosted in partnership with Orygen. Wth academic expertise, lived experience and perspectives from the education sector, the event explored the rise in ADHD diagnoses, socio-economic divides, the influence of age and gender, and how social media is shaping public understanding.
