Over the past week, St John of God Health Care was pleased to welcome senior Vatican official Monsignor Clemente Bobchev of Rome and Samsung Health executives to our Midland and Murdoch hospitals as part of a national tour of Catholic hospitals. As the final stop on the tour, the delegation met with caregivers and leaders across both sites, gaining insight into our mission-led approach to delivering compassionate, committed and connected care. Hosted by Catholic Health Australia and the Association of Ministerial PJPs Ltd, the tour provided an opportunity to showcase the depth and quality of Catholic health care in Australia, and to discuss future collaboration with Samsung’s global Catholic health network. St John of God Health Care thanks our colleagues across the Catholic health sector for hosting this meaningful visit, and we look forward to ongoing dialogue that strengthens our mission and advances innovation for the communities we serve.

Every day across our hospitals, services and communities, thousands of acts of care bring our Mission to life – to continue the healing mission of Jesus. The theme of our 2024–25 Annual Report, Every Moment Matters, captures the aspiration of our new strategy. The report celebrates the impact of compassionate, connected and committed care delivered across Australia and New Zealand. In the past year we: 🌟 cared for more than 400,000 overnight and same day patients across our hospitals and services, 🌟 welcomed more than 10,609 babies into the world, 🌟 delivered $29.1million in social outreach to support people experiencing homelessness, mental illness, addiction and disadvantage, 🌟 and employed more than 16,000 caregivers guided by our values of Hospitality, Compassion, Respect, Justice and Excellence. These numbers tell only part of the story. Behind each one is a person cared for with dignity – and caregivers who provide compassionate, connected and committed care every day. Thank you to our caregivers, doctors and partners for making 2024–25 a year of hope and healing, and to the patients and clients who entrusted us with their care. Every Moment Matters - brought to life by our caregivers. When one of our Subiaco caregivers cared for a patient in his final days, she focused on what mattered most - comfort, compassion, and connection. Moments like these remind us that the greatest impact often comes from the smallest acts of kindness. They also reflect the heart of our St John of God Health Care Strategy - a bold, future-focused direction built around our aspiration statement: Every Moment Matters – Compassionate, committed and connected care. Across all five priority areas - Sustainability, Care Journey, People First, Integrated Care, and Community Impact - our caregivers are shaping a future where every moment truly matters. We are delighted to celebrate another proud moment from St John of God Health Care’s success at the AMA WA Awards night, with Dr Maria Foundas receiving the DHASWA Champion of the Year (Jonathan Morling Legacy Award) 🌟 Dr Foundas was recognised for doing the most to champion the cause of doctors’ and medical students’ health in Western Australia. A highly respected Senior Geriatrician at St John of God Midland Hospital, Dr Foundas is known for her compassion, leadership, and tireless commitment to the wellbeing of Junior Doctors. Today marks the anniversary of the Armistice signed on 11 November 1918, which brought an end to the First World War. Every year, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we pause to remember the courage, sacrifice and service of all who served. Across every conflict and generation, doctors, nurses, stretcher bearers and volunteers have stood beside the wounded, offering care, comfort and dignity amid the chaos of war. Today, as we honour the courage and sacrifice of the men and women who served, we also reflect on the enduring legacy of compassion carried forward by caregivers across St John of God Health Care. From field hospitals of the past to today’s wards and theatres, the Mission to serve with humanity, hope and healing continues. We also recognise that for many, the impact of service is lifelong. Our Emergency Services and Defence Trauma Recovery Unit at St John of God Health Care Langmore Centre and services at St John of God Richmond Hospital offer trauma-informed mental health care tailored to the unique needs of veterans and emergency services personnel living with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) - honouring their service with care, understanding and respect. Lest we forget.

We are proud to celebrate Dr Jemma Hogan, who was named Junior Doctor of the Year (Dr Camille Michener Legacy Award) at this year's AMA (WA) Awards 🌟 This award recognises Dr Hogan for her outstanding contribution to the medical profession and community. Dr Hogan recently spearheaded the creation of a Western Australian tutorial group to support doctors undertaking medical leadership studied with the Royal Australian College of Medical Administrators (RACMA) – an initiative which fostered a strong sense of community, collaboration and ongoing professional development among trainees. She also worked closely with RACMA to reform training leave policies, improving access and flexibility for colleagues undertaking parental or other training leave. “After preparing for my Royal Australian College of Medical Administrators fellowship exams, I wanted to give back to the medical community by creating a state-based tutorial group,” Dr Hogan said. “This has enabled other trainees to connect and prepare with colleagues, gaining insights from their varied experiences, as otherwise their preparation would have been a far more solitary and isolating process.” At St John of God Midland Hospital, Dr Hogan inspires our Junior Doctors through her facilitation of leadership and governance education programs. “St John of God Health Care has been instrumental in supporting my unique, dual training pathway in paediatrics and medical management, and for that I feel very grateful. I have seen firsthand the organisation’s values being lived by caregivers and have had amazing career opportunities during my time here,” she shared. Please join us in congratulating Dr Hogan on this deeply deserved recognition - a true reflection of her dedication and leadership within both St John of God Health Care and the wider medical community 👏 To read the full AMA WA Awards story: https://bit.ly/3JsAXFI

The WA Government has announced its intention to purchase St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital. Pending negotiations, the transition of the private hospital into the public health system is expected to be complete in 2026. The hospital will continue delivering vital health services for the community and once transitioned into the public system, will operate as a public hospital - maintaining its long-standing role in local care. While negotiations take place, the hospital will continue to provide both private and public healthcare services under contract. We are proud of Mt Lawley’s legacy of compassionate care and are deeply grateful to our caregivers and specialists for their ongoing commitment to providing healing hope and dignity. We will work with Mt Lawley caregivers to identify appropriate options across St John of God Health Care and WA Health. A significant number of caregivers will be provided the opportunity to take up positions at our new Midland Private Hospital when it opens in 2026. Further details are expected to be clarified over coming months. Read more in our media release: https://bit.ly/4oouomy

We have officially opened Horizon House West Leederville - a new facility providing safe housing and holistic support for young parents and their babies who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. This $5.6 million project, made possible through the generosity of our supporters and a Lotterywest grant of nearly $800,000, includes six fully furnished one-bedroom apartments, a shared kitchen, and landscaped gardens. More than a home, Horizon House offers wrap-around services to help young parents aged 16–22 continue their education, build life skills, find employment, and stay socially connected. “Pregnancy and early parenting are pivotal times in life, and without the right support, they can also be very vulnerable times. St John of God Horizon House West Leederville will give young parents not only a safe place to live, but also the skills, connections and confidence to build a brighter future for themselves and their children,” said St John of God Social Outreach CEO Susan Cantwell. For more than 20 years, Horizon House has helped young people across WA and Victoria build independence and stability.
