Today we launch Opal’s 2024 Sustainability Report, reinforcing our ongoing commitment to realising our vision: Opal shapes the future through sustainable packaging. Our progress spans reducing emissions, enhancing circularity, responsible sourcing of wood fibre and driving efficiencies in water and energy—while supporting our people, communities and working with our customers to create more sustainable packaging solutions. In 2024, we achieved a reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions, moving us toward our 2030 near-term target (-45% Scope 1 and 2 emissions (vs FY21) and Net Zero 2050 goal. This report reflects the collective effort of our teams and partners as well as our ongoing commitment to improving the transparency of our value chain. 👀 Watch the TV news story about the new feasibility study at our Maryvale Mill. The study, in partnership with European Energy Australia and Ammongas, is running until mid-2026 and explores the capture of biogenic CO2. This can then be used as a replacement in the chemical industry or for potential use with green hydrogen to make e-methanol, a low carbon fuel alternative that can be used in shipping. This collaboration aligns strongly with Opal’s long term decarbonisation strategy, supporting circular use of renewable resources and lower-carbon industrial innovation. If successful, the project could enable significant carbon capture capability in Gippsland and help unlock new opportunities for sustainable fuels in Australia. https://lnkd.in/gvyjpcf8

We’re exploring new energy solutions in Gippsland 🌱⚡ A new feasibility study at Opal’s Maryvale Mill is exploring how biogenic CO2 can be captured and converted into e-methanol, a low-carbon fuel alternative to fossil fuels used in shipping. The study, in collaboration with European Energy Australia and Ammongas, will assess the technical and commercial potential of using CO2 produced from renewable plantation wood as a feedstock for e-fuel production. “If the feasibility outcome is successful, it offers the potential for a multimillion-dollar investment in carbon capture in the Gippsland region,” said David Jettner, Opal General Manager Environment and Sustainability. It was great hosting a group of chemical engineering students from UNSW, showing them how we take quality used cardboard, repurposing it into 100% recycled paper that is then made into recyclable cardboard packaging. Circularity in action!
🚀 Last Wednesday we had the privilege of visiting Opal's Paper Mill in Matraville. Our members got to see large-scale chemical engineering in action, and were given valuable insights into the operations of one of Australia and New Zealand’s leading integrated manufacturers and recyclers of fibre packaging and paper products. It’s inspiring to see real-world manufacturing, sustainability and innovation come together under one roof. 🌎♻️ A huge thank you to the Opal team for opening their doors, and to Robert Carry & Paul Chappell for such an engaging and informative tour!
