We’re the tiny but mighty Architects specialising in Residential, Commercial, Social & Educational Architecture.

About us

We’re Ink Duck (formerly Tanya Mathers Architecture & Design) - the tiny but mighty Brisbane-based architects designing spaces where people work, learn and live well. Uncompromising architecture that meets your brief, ticks your project boxes and delivers a little something more? That’s our deal. And we deliver it by taking a different approach. At Ink Duck, what we aim for is the kind of creative audacity that makes a person say, “let’s make a film about a tornado full of sharks”. And we approach practical project constraints—like timelines, materials and budgets—not as hurdles to overcome but as fuel for fresh ideas and innovation. When you work with our team, you can expect us to leave architecture-speak, design hype and egos at the door. Instead, we get straight to what matters most to your space, your project and you—so we can plan, problem-solve and design it to life. Peruse our projects and you might find there’s no signature Ink Duck style. That’s intentional. Instead of putting our own stamp on the work, we deliver spaces with the unique style of the client, the feel of the space and the ideas we bring to life together. If standard is what you need, we’ll do it and we’ll do it well. But if you’re looking for an alternative to the norm, we’re not afraid to stick out our creative necks to help you achieve it. No matter the size or type of project we’ll put all our deft-problem solving, commercial savvy, exceptional design skills, original ideas and small team personal approach behind it—that’s the Ink Duck style.

Progress update on the Caloundra Rise Community Centre refurbishment. From schematic design to detailed visuals, the project is moving forward with a clear vision for transforming this well-loved community hub. The proposed design reimagines how the spaces are used, creating a more flexible, light-filled and welcoming environment that better supports community activities and improves the overall experience for residents and visitors. Exciting to see this design taking shape and to share a glimpse of what’s ahead. Commencing onsite early 2026 with Gripfast Consulting #community #communityliving #inkduck #architects

There’s a fresh new addition making waves at The Sanctuary in Caboolture South - a sparkling outdoor pool that’s ready to enjoy as the warmer months approach! The new pool joins a string of recent upgrades, including a gym, bocce court, clubhouse, cinema and updated dining spaces. For resident Mary, who moved to The Sanctuary 18 months ago, the change has made a real difference to her lifestyle. “With my eyesight deteriorating, it was important to me that I live somewhere that was flat. And since I don't have a car, it's very handy to be so close to the shops, and I can easily catch the local bus to Redcliffe, walk by the water and stop for lunch at the club." “I truly love the freedom I have here. As a passionate gardener I have a private courtyard, but I was thrilled when the community manager also offered me my own space in the communal gardens. The new pool looks beautiful, and it is a great spot to catch up with friends. I couldn't have picked a better place.” From garden beds to poolside chats, sounds like The Sanctuary is blooming with possibilities! 🏊🌼🎉 Lynn McGavin | Anna Rogers | Lee-Ann Olin | Julie Andrews | Mark Dunne | #Aveo | #RetirementLiving | #Queensland

  • Celebrating Five Years with James Kenny Today we’re marking five years since James Kenny joined us. Technically it’s closer to six now, which probably says everything about the pace of life around here. James has been with us since before Ink Duck was Ink Duck. He has seen this studio evolve, change names, grow, and find its rhythm. Through all of it, he has been steady, thoughtful, and deeply committed to doing great work for our clients and our team. James Kenny, you are part of the family here. You are valued more than you know, and we are incredibly grateful for everything you bring to this practice. We’ll be celebrating properly over lunch and sharing a few snaps, but for now, a very big thank you. Here’s to the next chapter. #greatemployees #inkduck

  • Designing school environments is about more than buildings. It is about supporting how children learn and how teachers teach. At Ink Duck, we focus on evidence-based design principles that create environments where education can thrive. Research tells us that well-designed learning spaces influence focus, behaviour, wellbeing, and academic outcomes. Here is where we place our energy when designing schools: Connection to the outdoors - Natural light, fresh air, outdoor learning zones and views to landscape all support calmness, wellbeing, and cognitive function. Nature matters. Acoustics and noise control - Children concentrate better in quiet, controlled environments. Teachers can teach without strain. Good learning requires clarity. Flexibility without chaos - Rooms and breakout spaces that adapt to modern learning, without becoming distracting or hard to manage. Calm, clear, purpose-driven layouts. Movement and circulation that makes sense - Logical flow means less congestion, safer transitions, and smoother operations for staff. Students move confidently through space. Materials that last and simplify life - Durable, low-maintenance finishes allow schools to prioritise students, not constant repairs. Real life over glossy render life. Great school design is not about architectural ego. It is about creating environments that quietly support human development, day after day, year after year. #gooddesign #education #inkduck

  • We’ve just launched our updated Education Capability Statement, highlighting the range of learning environments we’ve designed, from early education through to tertiary and community learning spaces. Our approach is centred on creating spaces that are functional, flexible and enduring, balanced with bold ideas and thoughtful design. We stay nimble, hands-on and collaborative. No egos. No fluff.
