About us

The Great Barrier Reef Foundation is creating a future for the world’s coral reefs by restoring reefs and coastal habitats and helping them adapt to the impacts of climate change. We’ve built a collaborative organisation to raise funds, invest in innovative ideas and design real-world, scalable conservation programs that are delivering breakthroughs in marine and terrestrial restoration. Walking in step with First Nations Peoples and front-line communities, the Foundation is fast-tracking and deploying solutions around the world.

  • Heartbreaking news from Ningaloo! 🪸   Scientists have confirmed that almost two out of three corals monitored on the World Heritage–listed Ningaloo Reef have died following this year’s marine heatwave.   This is a sobering reminder of how vulnerable coral reefs are to rising ocean temperatures. Bleaching occurs when stressed corals expel the algae that feeds them, turning them white. Corals can recover if conditions improve, but this prolonged heatwave has resulted in extensive mortality.   Summer is becoming increasingly tough for reefs worldwide. As marine heatwaves intensify, bleaching events grow more frequent and severe. Events like this highlight the urgent need for action. Every coral matters. Every effort counts.   Learn more about the impacts of coral bleaching: https://lnkd.in/ghqdJPFd. 📷: Blue Media

  • What is coral spawning? 🤔 Each year, when conditions are just right, Australia’s largest living icon bursts into new life in one of the greatest shows on the planet. In a coral's natural reproductive process, known as coral spawning, they release eggs and sperm into the water, which rise to the ocean surface, fertilise with other gametes and create coral babies. Why do we love spawning? It's an exciting and busy time for Reef researchers, tourism operators, Traditional Owners and volunteers to scale up restoration efforts in a narrow window of time. • Exciting momentum for the Pacific! Building on the energy of the first workshop, the Resilient Reefs Pasifika Accelerator program is already looking ahead to the next one. In July, community leaders from across the Pacific gathered in Fiji to build capacity, shape projects and amplify reef and community resilience. Discover more about how this workshop marks an important step in supporting Pacific‑led projects that create meaningful, lasting impact: https://lnkd.in/gWXtTM9h 👀 And now, we’re looking ahead! Selection is now underway for the second Accelerator cohort. If you’d like to learn more, or nominate a project for future cohorts, skip to the end of the blog for details. • Our Reef is a living masterpiece, home to thousands of incredible marine animals. For generations it has sparked the kind of wonder that lasts a lifetime. But right now, the Reef is in danger. Without urgent action and intervention, 90% of the world’s coral reefs could be lost by 2050. Help us protect this incredible natural wonder so future generations can experience its magic too. Tomorrow’s Reef depends on what we do today. Don’t wait. Donate: https://lnkd.in/gp8Ni4ej 👀 Tomorrow needs you, now. 📷: James Unsworth, Ocean Rafting

  • It was an underwater snowstorm on the Great Barrier Reef overnight. 🫧🪸🫧 Coral spawning gifts new life to our Reef releasing enough eggs and sperm into the water to produce trillions of baby corals. This footage was captured on the Whitsundays the moment these tiny bundles exploded into the water. This amazing natural phenomenon represents a critical window for us each year to scale up restoration efforts. While the majority of us slept last night, tourism operators, researchers, Traditional Owners and marine scientists were out on the water making the most of the once-a-year event. Keen to know more about coral spawning? Join our webinar, this Friday, 14 November at 10am AEST. • True impact for the Reef happens when we work together. Each year, coral spawning opens a brief but powerful window — a moment where research, collaboration and impact come to life on the Reef. It’s in these moments that partnership truly matters. Ahead of this year’s spawning event, we’re proud to have signed a new Partnership Agreement and Collaboration Framework with the Australian Institute of Marine Science, strengthening our shared commitment to the Reef’s future. This agreement builds on years of successful collaboration and ensures every opportunity, including this spawning season, becomes a catalyst for progress and a chance to safeguard a healthy, resilient Reef for generations to come.

  • Please help us share the love for our Reef. 🫶 Coral spawning is an exciting and busy time of year for Reef scientists as spawning provides them with an extraordinarily narrow window for Reef research and restoration efforts. For this reason, we’ve put together a special webinar, Hope Is Alive on the Reef, to explore the magic behind one of nature’s most extraordinary events and how interventions can play a vital role in natural Reef recovery. Attendees will learn about: - The wonder of coral spawning. - How Coral IVF helps reefs regenerate naturally - How your support fuels restoration innovation We would very much appreciate your support by sharing this webinar with your networks. Here’s where people can register: https://lnkd.in/eW6dNZrk Every share helps amplify hope for our Reef’s future. 🪸🫧
