I was fortunate to be awarded a Mushroom Fund Scholarship Program for 2025 from Australia Mushroom Growers Association (AMGA) and Hort Innovation Australia for an international mushroom study tour. This was the Composting Masterclass from 6 to 10 October undertaken by @Mark den Ouden from the Mushroom Office in Netherlands. The theory class was held at De Locht Museum, this was befitting as it is an agricultural heritage museum in the local area. The course explored the Planet of Mushrooms through a plethora of knowledge, expertise and networks that opened doors for new insights. The participants were from companies that are amongst the largest within the represented countries, that is New Zealand, Canada, Australia and Netherlands.
Completion of prerequisite course work attaining an online Extended Mushroom Composting Certificate with 7 modules through from Mushroom Office was undertaken inorder to participate effectively. I had earlier completed an online Extended Mushroom Growing course with 7 modules from Mushrrom Office organised by Costa Mushrooms.
The study tour took us to some of the leading compost and growing sites in the world including an organic farm, we visited Walkro in Maasmechelen in Belgium, Hooymans Substrates and CNC in Netherlands, and Substratwerk Gartherheide GmbH & Co in Germany.
I was mesmerised with the scope and extent of operations at the farms visited, it brought another dimension that left the mind intrigued, a quote from David T Iannone “an opportunity to see something new or see something in a new way”. Passing through borders within Schengen countries without border and passport control was a first to see for me as it is part the trade agreement amongst these conutries. The amount of investment made in businesses visited and production systems adopted to ensure effectiveness and efficiency in operations addressing safety, quality and consistency of product, and lower cost of production etc was tremendous including technological customisation of certain equipment and processes to have better margins.
I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to AMGA and Hort Innovation for the scholarship that has allowed me to see some of the best mushroom production systems in the world. The course stimulated the mushroom minds to be creative and innovative. I would like to thank Costa Mushrooms for the opportunity to be part of their organisation that promotes continuous improvements and learning. The differences in production systems was very fascinating, kept the class engaged and interesting. A certificate on attendance was awarded at the end of the course. I greatly learnt a lot, extended my global networks , ignited a mindset of addressing challenges in a variety of ways. I recommend such courses for passionate mushroom growers.
