More than 10 per cent of Australian residents are on temporary visas and these migrants play an important role in the country’s economy. Despite this, the impact of the housing crisis on this group receives little attention. New #AHURIresearch delves into the housing experiences of temporary migrants and how systems can be improved to boost their wellbeing and economic contribution. The research, ‘Temporary visa holders and housing: findings from an Investigative Panel’, was undertaken by researchers from University of South Australia, University of Sydney, University of Tasmania and RMIT University. New #AHURIresearch explores the impact of the housing crisis on temporary migrants, and how new support systems could enhance migrants’ wellbeing and economic contribution. This research explores the distinct housing issues faced by temporary migrants, who generally lack eligibility for housing support. “There’s no government department that really looks after temporary migrants and this disconnect means the housing pressures can go unrecognised, and leave migrants facing a form of hidden homelessness,” says lead researcher, Dr Debbie Faulkner. The research, ‘Temporary visa holders and housing: findings from an Investigative Panel’, was undertaken by researchers from University of South Australia, University of Sydney, University of Tasmania and RMIT University. AHURI Head of Development Dr Tom Alves spoke with Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) News about housing affordability in South East Queensland ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This follows the release of the report from AHURI and Q Shelter, 'South East Queensland Displacement Monitoring: 2025 update'. "There has been a significant uptick in house prices immediately before this kind of event, so we are starting to monitor to see if that happens here," shared Tom. New #AHURIresearch seeks to realise the benefits of shared equity programs for participants and governments. With more people struggling to buy their first home, Federal, State and Territory Governments are increasingly adopting shared equity schemes to help Australians purchase a property. Ensuring these schemes are well designed and easily understandable can help ensure they are fit-for-purpose, maximise desired outcomes, and avoid unintended consequences like house price inflation. The research, ‘Shared equity programs in Australia: features, impacts and growth potential’, was undertaken by researchers from Curtin University, UNSW, Swinburne University of Technology and University of Cambridge. New #AHURIresearch shows how to improve outcomes for shared-equity program participants and governments. The research looks at shared equity schemes, where governments or other organisations help people buy a home in exchange for part-ownership of the property. It compares the advantages, disadvantages and unintended consequences of different models, and creates an evidence-base to support the design of future government-led shared equity programs. “For most households wanting to become homeowners, shared equity is rarely going to be the ideal or perfect solution,” says lead researcher, Professor Rachel Ong ViforJ. “But for many it is an acceptable solution, and for the majority taking up government-backed products, it is the only one.” The research, ‘Shared equity programs in Australia: features, impacts and growth potential’, was undertaken by researchers from Curtin University, UNSW, Swinburne University of Technology and University of Cambridge. In the lead up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Q Shelter and AHURI are monitoring changes in housing market conditions, social housing provision and homelessness near Games-related venues. The second report of this study, released this week, reveals some positive changes over the last 12 months but also highlights several areas to watch as Brisbane 2032 approaches. As The Hon Sam O'Connor MP said earlier this year, ‘Our housing strategy must consider and respond to housing opportunities—before, during and after Brisbane 2032… to make sure this event can benefit all Queenslanders.’ Read the report: https://bit.ly/4oVrMwv #Homelessness #Brisbane2032 #HousingMarket
