About us

The Australasian College for Emergency Medicine is committed to the training, examination and representation of specialist emergency physicians in Australia and New Zealand. Founded in 1984 with a base of 73 Fellows, ACEM now represents over 1,800 Fellows and 2,300 trainees. Overseeing the training and written and clinical examinations of trainees is a major part of ACEM’s mission, as is providing a program of continuing professional development for Fellows. ACEM has a vital interest in the quality of emergency medical care provided to the community and therefore has a wide range of subsidiary objectives relating to emergency department accreditation, policies and standards for the emergency medical system, teaching and research, publication, and those aspects of the medico political framework that have a direct impact on health outcomes for emergency patients.

  • Emergency medicine as a speciality is turning 25 years old in Papua New Guinea. EM trainee Dr Ulysses Oli, a final-year candidate of the Masters of Medicine in Emergency Medicine (MMed EM) program at the University of Papua New Guinea, currently working at the Port Moresby General Hospital ED, reflects on what this means to him. "I fell in love with the specialty during residency when I saw first-hand how emergency physicians commanded a chaotic shift, running mini-ICUs in the resuscitation bay, manoeuvring through ECGs and ultrasounds while still having time to teach and to come back sane the next day," Dr Oli said. • This is good news for Western Australian patients. The Government’s $1.5 billion hospital upgrade package - including expanding the emergency department at Royal Perth Hospital and bringing St John of God Mount Lawley Hospital into the public system - is a welcome step toward easing pressure on emergency care. Since the last election, ACEM has been advocating for increased inpatient capacity to reduce bed block and support safer, more timely care. We look forward to continuing to work with Minister for Health Meredith Hammat MLA on solutions that improve wait times and patient outcomes.
