Updates

  • We’re proud to share some highlights from last week’s official opening of our newly upgraded and expanded Apmere Mwerre Visitors Park (AMVP) hostel – a celebration of growth, collaboration, and community impact. The construction of 20 additional short-term beds at AMVP, ensures more First Nations families have a safe place to sleep in Alice Springs, including those impacted by family and domestic violence. Upgrading this facility enables AHL to continue to deliver on our purpose of providing safe and affordable accommodation for First Nations people. At the event, we shared our appreciation for the local community members, stakeholders and service providers who ensured the expansion project remained culturally responsive and aligned with community expectations. Thank you to everyone who attended the official opening last week. We are grateful for our dedicated team, partners, and supporters who share our vision for creating meaningful change. Swipe through to see moments from the official opening event. #Officialopening #Openingceremony #AliceSprings

  • Earlier this week, AHL was honoured to welcome Minister for Indigenous Australians, Senator the Hon Malarndirri McCarthy to officially open our upgraded and expanded accommodation facilities at Apmere Mwerre Visitors Park (AMVP) hostel in Alice Springs, on Tuesday 11 November. AHL received $4.9 million in Commonwealth Government funding to add 20 additional short-term beds at AMVP, ensuring more First Nations families have a safe place to sleep and seek support, including those impacted by family and domestic violence. This expansion reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting the Alice Springs community, where there continues to be high demand for our services. AHL plays an important role in First Nations communities, providing a home away from home with culturally safe and affordable accommodation, including 3 meals a day. We sincerely thank Minister McCarthy for her time, support, and recognition of the positive impact this project will have in the Alice Springs region. We’re proud of what our team and partners have achieved together. Malarndirri McCarthy Shane Hamilton PSM #Officialopening #MinisterMcCarthy #AliceSprings

  • On this Remembrance Day, AHL honours the memory of those who lost their lives or suffered in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. We acknowledge their service and the sacrifices made for our country, both on the war front and at home. It is estimated that around 1,000 First Nations people served in the First World War, and over 4,000 First Nations people served in the Second World War. Because cultural background was not officially recorded at the time, the full contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander servicemen and women is still unknown. We recognise and commemorate all who served and continue to serve — and the many whose stories are still being uncovered.   We will remember them. #RemembranceDay2025 #LestWeForget Artwork via Lee Anthony Hampton from Koori Kicks Art

  • ‘I’m excited to be able to welcome and support more people and families at AHL’s Apmere Mwerre Visitor Park. This investment will make a real difference in the lives of First Nations people,’ said Deanne Bear, Director of Frontline Services, SA, WA and Central. Anticipation is building as AHL’s Apmere Mwerre Visitor Park expansion project gets closer to completion. In late 2023, AHL received $3.5 million from the Australian Government to deliver additional accommodation for First Nations people in Alice Springs, including women and children experiencing domestic violence. This upgrade at Apmere Mwerre Visitor Park will deliver 20 additional short-term beds at the hostel. We’re looking forward to the grand opening next month. The delivery of additional accommodation in Alice Springs demonstrates AHL’s ongoing commitment to deliver tangible outcomes for First Nations communities, particularly in Central Australia.

  • October is Mental Health Month, a time when the Australian community comes together to raise awareness and promote better mental health for all. This year’s theme, ‘Taking Steps on Your Wellbeing Journey’, is all about celebrating steps that we take towards improving our mental health and wellbeing. The theme encourages us to embrace progress, growth, and ongoing self-improvement, while reminding us that wellbeing is not a final destination but instead is a continuous journey. Connection to Country plays an important role in social and emotional wellbeing for First Nations people. Taking time to connect with Country is part of the wellbeing journey. Now is the time to remember the importance of looking after our mental health and wellbeing. • Today, Dermot Walsh, Interim CEO of AHL, will be speaking at the 2025 National First Nations Housing and Homelessness Forum. Meeting on Kaurna Land, this forum brings together voices from across the nation to share knowledge and experiences in housing supply and capacity, with a focus on the policies driving change in homelessness and participation for First Nations communities. Dermot will be speaking about the role of AHL as both a stepping stone for First Nations people accessing vital services and as a safe haven in times of need. Dermot will showcase the impact of AHL’s services and discuss how access to safe and affordable accommodation enables First Nations people to travel away from home to access a range of services and opportunities. We are looking forward to the opportunity to connect with other organisations that make a positive impact on the lives of First Nations people.
