I tried several gfamily history packages before settling on MacFamily. Don’t think I’ll try anything else. Integrates well, lovely graphics, easy to use and takes advantage of Mac and familysearch integration. A winner all round.

Wasted development on unnecessary eye candy

While this app has a few interesting new features like the “people who influenced others” and good visuals, it also has a lot of wasted development on unnecessary aspects: Why, for instance, does MFT have so many different charts? Why spend all that development time on it, when things like given name / family name swap for certain cultures would be much more interesting: in many Asian contexts the given name follows the family name, but that doesn’t mix well when family trees also have Western style names where the family name follows the given name.Why do 2D charts show an unnecessary 3rd dimension just to make them look fancy, but without adding any value to the 3rd dimension?The extended administrative fields make sense to have geographical localisation, but it’s all just a minor improvement for a family tree builder. That’s because you need the historical names for localities and administrative regions. Someone being born in Cologne, Germany in 1860 wasn’t born in a Bundesland (state) because that –and other– levels were named differently. You can’t apply today’s administrative names to historical names. So this doesn’t make sense. MFT could’ve made this a lot better by giving us the actual historical names at their time.

Stunning appearance but GUI is not standardised and contrary to Apple standards e.g. Adding an influential person gives you a screen long list of every combination of two field values (new/existing and roles). Lazy Programming. Similarly the programmer uses the system buffer to copy and paste a source reference, so you lose it as soon as you copy something from the source to use it and then quote the source. There is no way to quickly get back to the start of the menu logic tree in mobile version, so you back track thru all the menu choices again and again. Filters can be used in many places but to change or create one, you always have to back track thru the menus to edit or change one then got thru all the menu selections again to test it rather than having a single one line subroutine call for the create/edit filter function. Just silly sloppy things that make it harder, laborious , and frustrating to use!

This keeps asking me for reviews and ratings. So I oblige. Looks like this gets updated every 2 years. There doesn't seem to be any significant change in this version, mostly cosmetic. But I rely heavily on it, so I bought it as soon as it was advertised.
